Amálie Kutinová-Tauberováfaded front pages, see second picture
The fourth volume of Amália Kutinová-Tauberová's book series about Gabra and Málinka, inseparable sisters from Wallachia. This book was first published in 1938, in later editions it was combined with the previous work (Gabra and Málinka learn Latin), which closely follows it. Like the other parts of the series, this one is based on an autobiographical story about the author's coming of age: "Málinka" is the author herself and "Gabra" is her older sister Gabriela, but it is not written in their form and captures situations in which Málinka was not personally present. The book is written mainly in literary Czech, except for the main speech of the characters. The adult relatives of Gabry and Málinka also speak written Czech, but both girls speak the Wallachian dialect. The peculiarity of this piece is that most of the secondary characters speak the dialect of Kopanice, because this time the story takes place mainly in Moravské Kopanice.
It is the Moravské Kopanice that is the "magical land" in the title of the book. The author describes them very picturesquely, with an emphasis on nature, local customs, costumes and dialects, thereby foreshadowing her later orientation towards recording folk folklore, which she began to deal with more prominently at the time when her writing activities were suspended by the communist regime.
