In order to work as a veterinarian in 1912, Nellie married her childhood friend Philip De Groot, who had taken over the veterinary practice from his father. She didn't love him, but they had a strong friendship since childhood. Before their marriage, she promised him that she would give him his freedom if he had the opportunity to pursue his dream career as a musician. She really appeared after the end of the First World War, and then Phillip disappeared from her life without hesitation.
