In 1964, a student from the East and a student from the West will fall in love with the Youth Festival in East Berlin. He will help her escape, get married. Only after her death, the seventy -year -old Kašpar learns what his wife Birgit has kept his whole life secret: she gave birth to her daughter before escaping and leaving her in the GDR. Kaspar will do what she always wanted, but she couldn't - she was looking for her. The search becomes a way to the past and meetings with the wounds and scars left by the GDR, the coup in 1989 and adaptation to the West. When he finds her daughter, she lives married in a neo -Nazi national community in the countryside. Her fourteen -year -old daughter Sigrun is happy that her grandfather suddenly entered her life, just as he was happy about his granddaughter. But his world is as foreign to her as her for her.
