For nine years, Donté Drumm - a black youth from Slone, accused and convicted of the rape and brutal murder of a white girl, Nicole Yaber - has been on death row for the day he will be executed. That's how long his lawyer has been fighting to overturn the verdict. When nothing seems to avert the execution, the real killer, Travis Boyette, confesses to a Presbyterian pastor in another town about the crime for which Donté is to be executed. The battle begins with time and above all with the police and judicial machinery - however, it no longer serves justice, but rather the personal and career ambitions of politicians and policemen: if someone threatens their position, they do not hesitate to sacrifice him - even if it is the life of an innocent person. The novel Confession, the plot of which is again based on a true story, is another of Grisham's significant protests against judicial practice, and especially the death penalty, applied in many US states.
