Legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner not only climbed all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalayas, but at the turn of 1989/1990 he traveled a 2,800-kilometer route across the South Pole on foot in Antarctica, in 1993 he walked through Greenland (2,200 kilometers) and in April 1995 he stood on the north pole. After returning home, he began writing a book in which he charts the fascinating history of the conquest of both ice poles of the globe. As usual, he supplemented his readable text with a number of period and contemporary photographs and illustrations.
