How to "philosophically" justify murder? That some people's lives are worthless and therefore it is not a sin to take them? This is how Raskolnikov, the key character of Dostoevsky's novel from 1866, thinks. After his terrible act, he runs away and ends up in the family of the alcoholic Marmeladov. Raskolnikov falls in love with his daughter Sonia and confides in her what he has done. It is she who convinces him to confess and accept his punishment. The work is published in a new translation by Libor Dvořák.
