Together with his two friends, Messner tries to climb the west face of the Ortler by a route that has not been used for two hundred years. The output is dramatic. The climbers were stuck on a vertical wall at a height of a thousand meters. The situation is complicated by thick fog and a huge ice overhang above them. However, the way back is not possible, and the only way to escape is upwards. Once again, Messner must rely on his unerring instincts that have made him the most famous climber of all time.
Messner interweaves the dramatic description of the ascent with memories of how he conquered the most difficult alpine routes. There are also reflections on how people adapt nature to provide them with consumer experiences. It is spoken for the preservation of the "dangerous area of the mountains" for future generations.
