He finds himself in prison at a time when he and his wife are expecting a daughter. Everything takes an unexpected turn when Veronika is taken to the hospital. He has a few months left until the end of his sentence, so he can't go to the hospital to see his wife and she can't see him either. He feels helpless and is experiencing literal torture in the cell.
