Czech families settled in the foothill village of Sklář after the war. Among the new arrivals is the family of a young girl, Jarmila Lukešová. Her mother died during the war, so Jarmila has to take care of her two little brothers, but also her father, who loses the family's savings at cards. Jarmila falls in love with František Smolík in her new home, but he does not reciprocate her feelings. He believes that his beloved Paula will return from Germany. He also increasingly falls into conflict with local communists. But after the events of February 1948, his struggle is increasingly futile. The communists prescribe impossible supplies for the Smolíks for their economy, and there is also talk of planned collectivization. Jarmila is the only one who stands firmly by František in those difficult times. This is how he recognizes how brave a woman she is. It even seems that living together with her might be a consolation for what's to come. But no luck lasts forever, especially when the party and its secret police are circling around…
