Deep in a cave under the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the north of England, a man's body is found. Experienced Chief Inspector Jim Oldroyd with his younger colleague Carter, a newcomer from London, is being investigated.

The victim of the murder is Dave Atkins of the nearby Burntthwaite, where too many people had a reason to hate or even hate him. There is no shortage of suspects, but the circumstances of crime are not reasonable to Oldroy and Carter. How could Atkins' body find themselves in such a remote part of the cave?
