Rohan were one of the most important French noble families. Their ranks were important commanders and supporters of art, four Strasbourg bishops and several royal educators. After the outbreak of the French Revolution, they left France and joined the Habsburg military services. In 1820 they bought the castle Sychrov, which became their main seat. In northern Bohemia they built a large estate on which they supported cultural and industrial development. Prince Kamil Rohan Sychrov rebuilt into a gem of neo -Gothic architecture.
