In 1810, war is raging in Europe and Demelza Poldark impatiently awaits the return of her husband Ross, who is advancing with Wellington's army in Portugal. Their children have already grown up and are starting to find their place in life. The key to their entry into a new world of love and danger is the young man Stephen Carrington, whom Jeremy saves from certain death during a voyage at sea, and who later fundamentally affects the lives of all members of the Poldark household. Jeremy and Clowance have grown into sensitive, charismatic young people. Technically gifted, Jeremy takes a serious interest in steam engines and experiences a love that seems to have no future, and Clowance becomes a flighty bridegroom, much like her mother Demelza. They both sincerely love their parents, but the relationship between Jeremy and Ross is marked by shyness on both sides, which is a result of Ross's frequent trips to London or abroad on various missions for the Crown. Ross's old enemy, the widowed George Warleggan, and nephew Geoffrey Charles Poldark also come to an important life decision.
