"It doesn't look good, you must have had a soul!" the doctor tells the desperate non-heroic hero of Zamjatin's novel We, the world's first dystopian science fiction. That hero is the rocket expert D-503, the designer of a spacecraft that is supposed to spread the Benefactor's message in space that the happiness of each individual will be most reliably guaranteed if he leaves it to society to rationally manage his life in all aspects. But the contented, even joyfully accepted existence is turned upside down by the acquaintance with the erratic, illogical woman I-330, who leads D-503 to the tragic divide between betrayal and death.
