End of the 16th century.
The family of a small Czech nobleman is divided into two hostile camps due to inheritance and religious disputes. Adult siblings have not been in contact for many years. The father and one of the younger sons leave to fight in France, the other son makes a military career first in Poland, later in Holland. War expenses greatly drain the family coffers, eventually leading to debt and the sale of a large part of the property. So it happens that the feuding members of the family are once again forced to live in the mansion they abandoned many years ago and where the eldest son - the heir to the title - rules with a firm hand. The conflict escalates further when news arrives of the death of the father and one of the brothers. A widow appears at the ancestral home - a foreigner, about whom the family had no idea until this moment.
