In the 1920s, Bella Ainsworth opens the hotel in the picturesque town of Portofino on the idyllic Italian coast. He tries to give his family a new beginning in a situation where her relationship with her husband goes through a crisis, the younger son died and the older returned from the war with injury. Bella puts great hopes in the new hotel, but has to face many personal and operational difficulties, and everything is influenced by the harsh onset of Italian fascism and the blackmail of the local fascist politician Danioni.
