The film tells the story of birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Christian Bale). The events known from the biblical performance are depicted from the perspective of his mother Mary and thus receive an unusual dimension. Thanks to the parent bond with him he shares his achievements and his failure as no one else. Jesus of Nazareth, however, does not expect an ordinary pilgrimage, but the path that leads to the greatest conceivable glory redeemed by terrible suffering.
