An elusive killer can only be discovered by a detective who cannot move. New York security forces are on alert for the UN conference, but the situation is complicated by the discovery of the body of a bizarrely murdered man. Under the pressure of circumstances, the police ask for the help of former detective Lincoln Rhyme, who is paralyzed and bedridden after an accident. In order to follow the trail of the killer, who buries his tortured victims in a typically morbid way and deliberately leaves tiny traces, he teams up with a young orderly, Amelia, who thus becomes his "hands and feet". As the dead bodies pile up, the outlines of ancient horrors emerge from newly discovered information.
