Former police detective Fin Macleod has left his life in Edinburgh behind and returns to his native island, where he tries to restore broken relationships and fix up his parents' dilapidated house. Meanwhile, local police discover the body of a murdered young man in a bog on the Isle of Lewis, who, according to DNA tests, is related to the father of Finn's childhood sweetheart, Marsaila Macdonald. But Tormod Macdonald, now an old man suffering from dementia, has maintained throughout his life that he has no relatives. The story again alternates between two lines: the currently taking place Finn's search and the memory passages, which are narrated by the aged, confused Tormod. Can the sick old man remember past events? And shouldn't they have stayed buried in the swamp?
In the audiobook performed by Jiří Dvořák, whose captivating voice can suggestively convey the exciting search for truth and subjective retrospective, original musical accompaniment is used. He is able to distinguish the intermingling of past and present very well, thanks to the inclusion of motifs of traditional Scottish music in a modern concept, and thus evokes the gloomy but magical atmosphere of the Outer Hebrides so impressively that it gives chills.
