Escape to Hell - Juraj Šebo

In the military history of the 20th century we probably do not find many topics that would raise such an interest as Himmler Waffen-SS. It is questionable whether this interest is induced by admiration or shame. Waffen-SS will probably be a source of controversy forever.

In the military history of the 20th century, we probably do not find many topics that would raise such an interest as Himmler Waffen-SS. It is questionable whether this interest is induced by admiration or shame. Waffen-SS will probably be a source of controversy forever. They are blamed for the brutality and devotion to the Nazi regime. On the other hand, they are not forgotten about their positive values such as military friendship, bravery or reliability. Waffen-SS served the criminal regime, but their high combat value is a reality. 8200 citizens of the Slovak state were taken to Waffen-SS, which is not a negligible number. One of them was Gustav Wendrin. And he wasn't just an ordinary soldier. His story is intended for all who are interested in learning something about the history of what it really was. Many books have been written about aviation aces, extremely successful combat aircraft from the Second World War. Most of them come from German authors. Their heroes get on aircraft and head for enemy arms, fortresses, bridges. These books do not write that the aircraft did not only destroy Zbrojovka, ammunition warehouses and other military buildings, but also cities where tens of thousands of inhabitants lived. At least the anti -tank shooters can be said to have focused on purely military targets. In World War II, tank units played. As a result, the new heroes, the opponents of these frightening weapons appeared: anti -tank artillery. The most successful were considered heroes only in the narrow circle of their comrades. Already at the beginning of the war there were several extraordinary anti -tank shooters. One of them was Gustav Wendrin, a native of Bratislava. In 1940–1945 it served at Waffen-SS, specifically in the 8th SS-Kavaller-Division Florian Geyer. During the retreat fighting in Russia, he destroyed 45 opponents with a single cannon (four tanks knocked out armored fist), which is the highest number of tanks destroyed by one anti-tank cannon in World War II (only Wendrinský scored six T-34 tanks!). Some readers can see this book as a celebration of Waffen-SS units. The author's intention, however, was to show that men with sinister runes on library, who committed terrible crimes and atrocities, were at the same time the best German soldiers. Among them were thousands of men who performed their combat tasks alongside the army and did not participate in war crimes. One of them was Gustav Wendrin. His name forever remains synonymous with anti -tank ace.
