During the German occupation of the Netherlands between 1940 and 1945, all Jews were ordered to apply for their ancestors' religion. Reich Commissioner Arthur Seyss-Inquart hired young lawyer Hans Calmeyer to decide on "questionable cases". Calmeyer interpreted his task in his own way and managed to save at least 3700 people of Jewish origin from deportation and certain death. This is twice as much as the famous Oskar Schindler did. The author of the book Laureen Nussbaum - his native name Hannelore Klein - owes this brave German official for her life. In the book The Jewish star tells the story of how Calmeyer declared her mother to be a non -sideline, removed her and her family from the deportation lists, and thanks to him all survived the war. Calmayer's fates with the story of the author's family and her friend, later husband Rudi Nussbaum, also intertwined in the post -war period and we will watch them until their death. In the book we also read about Anna Frank, whose family the author's family was close. The Jewish star is an extraordinary story of human courage and stubbornness in the darkest hour of man's history.
