Shortly after the Thirty Years' War, a dying boy is pulled out of the Bavarian Schongau city. He has a tattooed sign on his shoulder, suggesting that it is a witch work. City councilors accuse a local midwife. Kat Jakob Kuisl, who is supposed to force it from torture tools, is convinced that an old woman is innocent. Together with Medik Simona and daughter Magdalena, they decide to track down the murderer.
